The history of Eminem
Born in 1972 in Missouri, USA, the young Marshall Mathers experienced a challenging childhood, before becoming one of hip-hop music's most influential and successful stars.
As one of the all-time best-selling musical artists, Eminem is recognised globally for his controversial and raw lyrical skills. He was the first recording artist to have 10 consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard chart.
After spending his teens and early twenties rapping and entering rap battles, Eminem was discovered in 1997, by an Interscope Records staff member, when finishing in second place at the Rap Olympics. He was then signed by hip-hop producing legend Dr Dre in 1998.
As his career went into orbit, his songs 'Not Afraid' and 'Love The Way You Lie' were certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making him the first artist to earn two Digital Diamond Awards.
Over the years, Eminem has won numerous awards, including 15 Grammys, a Best Original Song Academy Award, eight American Music Awards and 17 Billboard Music Awards.

- The Slim Shady LP: His major label, Dr Dre-produced debut in 1999 introduced the Eminem alter ego to the world. The album won him his first two Grammy awards, including one for Best Rap Solo Performance for 'My Name Is'.
