Zoltán Huszárik: Szindbád, Csontváry & Elégia: Five Short Films

£29.99

Released: 28th July 2025. Zoltán Huszárik was one of the great masters of international cinema. His unique and beautifully realised works set him apart from all other contemporary filmmakers, creating an intoxicating body of work that is unlike any other in modern cinema.      This Limited Edition three-disc Blu-ray Box Set includes his two feature film masterpieces Szindad (1971) and Csontvary (1979), a selection of his acclaimed short works, and an array of new and archival special features - plus individual booklets with writing on the films.  Disc 1: Szindbad (1971):  Considered a great ‘lost masterpiece’ of international cinema, Szindbad was chosen by Hungarian writers and filmmakers as one of the three best Hungarian films of all time. Based on the stories of surrealist writer Gyula Krúdy, this erotic elegy is a lush and sensuous depiction of the life, loves and memories of hedonist and serial seducer Szindbad (Zoltan Latinovits). Disc 2: Csontvary (1979) Huszarik's second - and final - feature is a complex and alluring portrait of artist Tivadar Csontvary Kosztka. Regarded as Hungary's greatest painter, Csontvary was driven to madness by his passionate desire to express the beauty and perfection of what he saw as God's creation on canvas. At once lyrical and surreal, the film is a vivid expression of the artists' impulse to create - and their proclivity to destroy.   Disc 3: Short films (1963 - 1976) A selection of Zoltan Huszarik's renowned short works, including his most famous film poem, Elegy (Elégia, 1965), a veneration of the horse and their service to mankind. The disc also includes Groteszk (1963), Capriccio (1969), Homage to Old Women (1972) and A Piacere (1976).  Extras: Limited Edition 3-disc Blu-ray Box Set. Szindbad (1971) and Csontvary (1979) presented from new 4K restorations by the National Film Institute Hungary - Film Archive. Elegy (1965), Capriccio (1969), Homage to Old Women (1972) and A piacere (1976) short films presented from new 4K scans by the National Film Institute Hungary - Film Archive. Szindbad: An appreciation: Filmmaker Peter Strickland on Huszarik's sumptuous vision.  Who is Zoltan Huszarik?: A short documentary exploring the life and vision of the great artist.  The World of Krudy and Huszarik: Exploring the collaboration between writer Gyula Krúdy and the filmmaker.  Huszarik and Contemporary Music: An interview with composer and regular collaborator Zoltan Jeney.  Inside the Popular Science Film Studio: Archival newsreel on the special photographic effects employed in Szindbad. Making Csontvary: Archival behind-the-scenes newsreel footage including an on-set interview with Huszarik.  Booklets featuring a new and expanded essay by film historian and producer Michael Brooke, and archival text by Zoltan Huszarik on writer Gyula Krudy and Szindbad. New and improved English subtitle translations. World premieres on Blu-ray. Region Free (A/B/C) Blu-rays. + MORE TBC
