Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh star in this adaptation of Tennessee Williams' play directed by Elia Kazan. Seemingly lost and broke, Southern belle Blanche DuBois (Leigh) travels to New Orleans to visit her pregnant sister, Stella Kowalski (Kim Hunter). Stella's brutish husband, Stanley (Brando), resents Blanche's presence, and is unhappy when she begins seeing his friend, Mitch (Karl Malden). The tension between Blanche and Stanley builds, reaching its climax when Stella is taken into hospital and the pair are left alone together. The film won four Academy Awards including Best Actress in a Leading Role (Leigh), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Hunter) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Malden) and was nominated for a further eight.
